Impersonators

1971 - 1972

Artist Statement
This series began by photographing a friend who was playing in a band at The Homestead Bar in Providence. After work there would be women, businessmen, bikers, straights, gays, and impersonators. The first night I was told to leave the bar because some of the customers did not want to worry about being in a picture. I photographed on the street in front of the bar. The second night, on the sidewalk, the police told me to stop photographing and “get back to where I belong”. I began photographing in the impersonator’s homes. Desires and conflicts of what I am and what I want to be, what I “should” look like, are everywhere. Realities of who I am underneath what I look like and what I look like to you is probably different than what I look like to me were always at play. Who might I be if you want me to be someone else?
